Does the type of camera matter?

Short answer: no. The camera type doesn’t matter as long as you have a camera at hand at all. Why? Because the camera doesn’t take great photos -> you do. Whether it’s editorial photography, fashion photography, capturing a model on set (or any other type of photography for that matter), what makes the image stand out is your eye, not the gear. You need to know lighting, framing, how to control your camera, and how to be aware (more on how to learn awareness next time). Please don’t get stuck in the mindset of “If I only had type x camera” or “just one more lens, and I know I’ll be able to take shots like photographer x.” And please, I guarantee you, we’ve all been there.

So let’s repeat after me: gear does not make a good photographer. It’s you that makes a good photographer, you can certainly believe me on that. In case you still don’t want to believe me, then how about this: I challenge you to take just one camera and only one lens on your next outing and work things around. Didn’t bring your telephoto lens? Go closer and include other elements in your frame to make your subject stand out (you can train yourself to do that).

To take a good photo means knowing how to draw people in with composition, framing, and lighting. And that, my friends, you can do with any camera.
