Off Camera Flash
Off camera flash is incredibly powerful, and if I had known earlier I would have gotten my hands on a good flash sooner. We have a pretty fitting saying in German “Was der Bauer nicht kennt, frisst er nicht” - literally “What the farmer doesn't know, he doesn't eat.” Basically, we're often hesitant to try things we're unfamiliar with. But I promise, once you start using it, it's hard to go back.
I am NOT working for Profoto - I wish haha - but if you're looking for a beginner friendly flash, Profoto would be my recommendation, although it is a bit more expensive. There are plenty of great alternatives out there too, but I've personally had such a positive experience with mine.
If you're afraid flash might look too much like flash, just scroll down and you'll see some real life examples of me using it. Does it look too flashy? Most people are surprised to learn that many images they assume were shot in beautiful natural light were actually lit with flash. I know I was.
One of my favorite things about off camera flash is the consistency it gives you. Instead of chasing perfect light or hoping for good weather, you can create your own light almost anywhere. Whether it's noon, sunset, indoors, or outside, you have so much more control over how your final image looks.
Not only that, but flash often lets you keep your ISO lower, which means cleaner images with less noise. More importantly, it gives you complete creative control. You decide where the light falls, how dramatic the shadows are, what mood you're creating, and exactly where you want your viewer's eye to go.
Whether you want to shoot outdoors, dive into studio work, create more polished portraits, or potentially even get into commercial photography, learning to use off camera flash is one of the best investments you can make. It's an incredibly versatile tool that opens up so many creative possibilities.
I practiced a lot, and continue to do so. Every shoot teaches me something new, and that's part of the fun. The more you experiment, the more you'll realize that flash isn't there to make your photos look flashy. It's there to give you the freedom to create exactly the image you have in mind.
